PhD in Computational Biophysics at the Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa, Italy:
Modeling and Molecular Dynamics simulation on neuronal proteins

A 3 years PhD student position is available at the Center for Synaptic Neuroscience of the Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa, Italy, starting November 2016.
The project will involve structural modeling and molecular dynamics simulation  of synaptic proteins, in close interaction with experimentalists. Possible specific  topics include modeling optogenetic probes to modulate neuronal gene  transcription, studying the differential ATP and calcium binding by synapsin isoforms, or the structural and functional properties of the newly identified PRRT2 protein. Ideal candidates should have physics and/or chemistry background and experience in molecular dynamics simulations.

The IHRS BioSoft offers a guest student programma for Master studendts in Soft Matter and Biophysics. The programme takes place in Julich, Dussendorf, Cologne and Bonn.

IHRS BioSoft guest students will mainly work on a project with one of our PhD students or with a more advanced scientist from July 24 to September 30, 2016. In addition, they will participate in an  accompanying course program that includes lab courses and seminars in other IHRS BioSoft groups.
Applicants should be interested in interdisciplinary research, even if their research project will most probably be within one discipline.

We will provide financial support that covers accommodation costs and living expenses; a small number of travel grants is also available.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Applications are invited for two Early Stage Researcher Positions in

computational systems biology under the supervision of Prof. Julio R.

Banga, IIM-CSIC (Spain), starting in early 2016.

 

We are looking for people with a recent (obtained during the last 4 years) Master

degree in physics, applied math or engineering, and interest in computational

systems biology. These Marie-Curie positions are an excellent opportunity to

perform research and obtain a very good training.

 

There are two open positions:

 

Position ESR6: novel optimization methods for systematic development of dynamic models of biological systems.

 

Position ESR7: optimal control methods to explain and/or predict structure and operating principles in biochemical pathways.

 

Duration: 36 months. These Early Stage Reseachers (ESRs) will be hired

for 36 months each and will be expected to pursue a PhD. Candidates

must be in possession of a relevant Masters degree (or very close to

obtaining it) at the time of appointment.

 

Salary will be in the range of 33-36 k€ gross/year, according

to EU regulations (Marie Curie ITN Early Stage Researcher conditions).

 

Other benefits: the ESRs will be involved in a Marie-Curie network with

excellent opportunities for scientific and personal development,

including funding for short stays at top-class research groups in Germany and the

UK, plus regular training events and meetings across Europe.

Thesis in Bioelectrochemistry and Vibrational Spectroscopy Group, University of Strasbourg We are looking for a highly motivated student to join the ‘bioelectrochemistry and spectroscopy group’ in the UMR 7140, chimie de la matière complexe (http://complexmatter.unistra.fr/equipes-de-recherche/laboratoire-de-bioelectrochimie-etspectroscopie/accueil/) The project focuses on the study of the reaction mechanism of membrane proteins from the respiratory chain and the identification of inhibitors by means of electrochemical techniques and vibrational spectroscopies. The biosensor will be created by immobilizing the proteins on nanomaterials and the reaction followed by SEIRAS and SERS. We will focus on cytochrome bd oxidase as privileged enzyme target for future antibacterial drugs and a series of inhibitors tested. Similarly the NADH:ubiquinone reductase and the ATPase will be investigated. Further experiments will include the –SCN labeling of these proteins, in order to monitor redox induced conformational changes on the basis of an infrared probe. This international project will be part of the binational PhD college “enzyme reactivities and their applications” CDFA 0407 between groups from the university of Strasbourg in France and the university of Freiburg in Germany. Sufficient command of French OR English is requested.
